What is SLS-free shampoo?

An SLS-free shampoo does not contain the harsh and irritating ingredient sodium lauryl sulphate, which is a foaming agent (detergent) used by many hair care brands in the UK.

Sulfates are harsh chemical surfactants that dry out hair and can strip away color.

What are sulfates?

Sulfates, including sodium lauryl sulfate, are synthetic detergents, originally developed for the laundry industry. They are found in many shampoos, and if you check the ingredient list, the first ingredient will be sulfate - likely sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate.

Scientists created the first synthetic cleansers in the 1940's using a chemical called sodium lauryl sulfate. This man-made detergent was then used in a wide variety of cleaning products - including shampoos and personal care products.

What do sulfates do to your hair?

Sulfates are a chemical compound that make your hair strands swell up, and cause the outer cuticle layer to open and let natural moisturisers escape. This is an issue for everyone, but can be especially problematic for people using 'normal' shampoos on their beards and moustaches.

Sulfates also cause hair colour to fade. When the cuticle layer is lifted due to swelling, colour molecules leach out just like the natural moisturisers meaning that, using a shampoo with sulfates on your beard, will make your beard grey quicker.

So, if you value your beard's health and colour, make sure your shampoo does not contain sulfates, so SLS-free shampoo is the way to go!

Benefits of using a SLS-free shampoo:

  • Sulfate-free shampoos help retain the natural moisture and colour of the hair so your hair keeps its natural shine and softness.
  • Sulfates are harsh on the scalp and may cause irritation and itchiness. Sulfate-free shampoos are milder.
  • Sulfate-free shampoos are environmentally friendly as they are made mainly out of plant derivatives.
  • Sulfate-free shampoos help moisturize your hair and tame frizz.
